The steps outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art on upper 5th Avenue in Manhattan was a sight to behold on Monday night, as celebrities, supermodels, and prominent fashion industry figures ascended the stairs into the museum, for what was bound to be a night to remember. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” – fitting, given the influence of religion, specifically the aesthetic of the catholic faith, on designers, over many decades. Any fashion enthusiast can recall at least one stunning and mind-blowing collection from Christian LaCroix, John Galliano for Dior, and Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy, among many others. Madonna had also popularized the use of Christian symbolism in her music videos as well.
Compared to previous years when attendees of the gala would stick to safe and pretty when choosing their outfits, they seemed to have really embraced this year’s theme. There were some truly striking gowns that embodies the theme of the gala, that when coupled with the personality and attitude of the wearer on the carpet, made an impact on the carpet.
