The MET Gala is one of the biggest and most glamorous nights in fashion. The themed event presents an unusual opportunity for celebrities and A-list guests to go full throttle with playing dress-up and to have fun with fashion. This year’s theme,  “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” is sure to bring out some elaborate and over-the-top fashion, as luxury designers have been influenced by the sensibilities of the Catholic faith for decades. Anna Wintour who hosts the event, will be joined this year by Rihanna, Amal Clooney, and Donatella Versace as co-hosts.

Apparently it’s not all fun and games at the MET Gala, though, as many celebrities have spoken out against the event for being too high-pressured and structured, taking away all the fun in the process.  Amy Schumer referred to it as “punishment” in a 2016 interview with Howard Stern. Demi Lovato, who’s admitted to having issues with alcohol, said that she was so uneasy at the gala, that she was almost compelled to drink and had to attend an AA meeting afterwards, saying, “I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with, than the people at the Met Gala — fake and sucking the fashion industry’s d–k.” Tina Fey once referred to the event as a ” “jerk parade” while on David Letterman’s show in 2015, saying of the gala,  “If you had a million arms and all the people you would punch in the whole world, they’re all there,” before adding, “Clearly, I’ll never go again.” And as everyone knows by now, Gwyneth Paltrow described the MET Gala as “so un-fun,” in an interview with USA Today, adding, “It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.”

So what exactly is making the event so difficult for celebrities and attendees? Apparently there’s too much structure. Anna Wintour and Vogue have to approve everyone on the guest list, regardless of who buys the table. It means that even if Chanel or Gucci buys a table, for example, which is rumored to cost between $275,000 and $500,000, the designers cannot invite whomever they want as a guest – not without Anna’s approval. The red carpet arrivals are also timed, with attendants given time-slots, celebrities are not allowed to bring their publicists and cell-phones are banned, though some people ignored that rule and landed in hot water for it.

The MET Gala was started in 1946 to raise funds for the costume institute and the star studded event raises millions of dollars each year. Last year’s ball alone, raised more than $12 million. It is also a night for designers to showcase their creativity, on one of the most anticipated and photographed red carpet events of the year – providing a massive advertising platform for brands.

Whether the event is fun or not, we do know that there will be lavish fashion and all the biggest stars and supermodels will be in attendance, making this the best night for celebrity spotting in New York City. The streets around the museum on 5th Avenue are always packed with people excited to see their favorite starlet or model, so if you plan on going there, do yourself a favor and go early. The red carpet starts at 6pm.

Check back tomorrow morning for a breakdown of the fashion.
