Skin is in!

I’m sitting here trying to figure out how best to tell women that showing some skin is going to be all the rage next year—without coming across as a perv. The use of sheer fabrics to construct clothes was rampant on the runways this season, and while showing some skin is nothing new to women, it has been met with great trepidation, depending on the setting. And surely, no one expects a professional to walk into her office exposing fully what her deity gave her, but this season, designers have provided options beyond just the basic sheer tops. Tunics, coats, jackets, and other outerwear now all come in sheer options, which can be used to layer looks — like that stunning, coat-dress which opened Turkish designer Hakan Akkaya’s collection.

Ulla Johnson, Marchesa, Noon by Noor, Jason Wu, and Anna Sui all showed floral patterns on sheer fabrics for a softer, more feminine touch, while Prabal Gurung showed some stunning gowns, which I expect will eventually show up on red carpets come award season. Across the pond in London, we’re already seeing the trend continue, with Pringle of Scotland, Roksanda Ilincic, Burberry, and Preen by Thornton sending collections down the runway with sheer pieces included.

So maybe sheer doesn’t always have to mean showing skin, but you can definitely tease, by throwing on a coat or jacket over your look, or selecting a piece that isn’t entirely transparent. Remember, your body is yours and you’re entitled to show as much or as little skin as you feel comfortable showing, but designers are providing plenty of options to empower you to do as you wish.
